Under the sun

January 30, 2011

Vancouver doesn’t have a lot of great classic architecture, but the Sun Tower on Beatty Street is a rare exception. I recently had an opportunity to shoot a loft in a heritage building, whose rooftop deck is nestled almost directly beneath the landmark. It got me interested in the history of the building, so after many hours of research (well, OK, Wikipedia), I found out that the 82-metre Tower was at one time the tallest building in the British Empire, and that the colour on the roof is painted on, to imitate the patina of copper.

The loft is pretty nice inside too — sort of an electric cowboy update of a 1911 renovated warehouse. Su-Marie Baird has all the info if you’re interested.
